Port Dover, ON

On a lovely Sunday in August we wandered into Port Dover wondering where to eat. We walked up Main Street and found ourselves standing in front of Schofields Bistro. This is a really good looking restaurant! It is housed in a historic renovated building with a tonne of ambiance.
We walked into a large room with exposed brick walls and beautiful hardwood floors with the most amazing windows I have seen in a restaurant in a long time. We were greeted by our server who brought over glasses of ice water and an extra carafe. I decided to stick with the ice water since they serve Pepsi products.
After studying the menu, I decided that I wanted the chicken quesadilla with Caesar salad (after all, I've been told that Port Dover makes the best Caesar salad anywhere). The chicken quesadilla was a large flour tortilla filled with seasoned chicken, Jensen's mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, tomato, herbs and garlic grilled to perfection. The Caesar salad consisted of crisp romaine lettuce with bacon bits and croutons tossed in a house-made creamy garlic dressing and topped with a blend of parmesan, romano and asiago cheese.
The quesadilla was excellent. Extremely fresh tasting. The chicken was perfectly cooked. The cheeses melted perfectly with the tomato, herbs and garlic. It was grilled perfectly. The Caesar salad was also excellent...I don't know if it's the best I've ever had but it was good.
Overall, it was a great lunch. I really enjoyed our lunch at Schofields Bistro. This is a great place for an intimate meal or family get together. The food was very good, affordable and the service was excellent as well. Stop in next time you're in Port Dover.
In his opinion:
Port Dover has of late been featured on a few publications for having a great selection of food choices. This is a departure from the idea that the only food destinations in that town are fries shack or David's restaurant. On a hot weekend we made the trek to Port Dover in search of some good food inspiration and we indeed found it.
The selections are pretty good even if you don't steer too far away from the main streets. From bistros to creperies and all the choices on Walker Street, no one can ever say that there isn't a little for everyone.
On this particular day we decided on Schoflieds Bistro, a historical food spot in Port Dover with a reputation for the best Caesar salad anywhere. Located on Main St., this completely glass front restaurant has amazing curb appeal both looking in and looking out from the restaurant. The interior is very nice with exposed brick, very high ceilings, a clean look and beautiful hardwood floors. It feels inviting and familiar in a way.
I started off with a Mill St. Organic beer (surprise surprise) as I browsed through the menu. The selections are good and plentiful. I opted for the Chicken Pesto Panini (grilled chicken breast in basil pesto with artichokes and feta cheese). By picking this dish I would be sampling a favourite sandwich of mine and I also got to sample their famous or infamous Caesar salad as well.
The panini was very tasty and the ingredients tasted fresh and full of flavour. The chicken was very well prepared and never felt like an outsider in this panini, something that I experienced way too often in chicken sandwiches. The bread was also fresh and perfectly toasted and literally "wrapped" all the goodness inside the panini. Lastly, the Caesar salad was very fresh with chuncks of cheese and bacon bits. Naturally not the best I ever had but very good indeed.
The Good: Great location, good food and great service in a very nice place.
The Bad: Not much to add but wish it was closer to me.
The Verdict: An absolute must try in Port Dover. The locals have known forever that this place delivers in customer service, great food and ambiance and it's time everyone else in on the not so secret as well.
I give it 3 1/2 out of 5 Olives as rating
